[Novices] add to fedora menus

OK--what am I missing? According to the Gnome desktop menu help, I'm
supposed to be able to find a way to add new programs to my menus by
right clicking (somewhere). However the only options I see anywhere are
Help, Remove from Panel, Move, and Lock to Panel. When I right click a
blank area in the panel I get an option to "Add to Panel," but that
option doesn't include anything about adding apps. You'd think Desktop,
Preferences or Desktop, System Settings might be the solution, but No.
