BTW, /proc is not isolated to Linux. AIX (at least) has one too.

I don't think it is anywhere near 'cannonical truth' that "sysctl =
good" and "echo {} > /proc/{}" bad. I just read convincing arguements
(the entirity of which I don't now recall) that sysctl was preferable.
I google'd about but there is so much crap on sysctl and /proc I gave
up.
I know RedHat recommends sysctl over /proc but doesn't give much of a
reason.
