I'm not surprised.  I wouldn't think gedit would do that.

Probably some special character your mail reader uses to display the
indentations and/or newlines.

Yes, but I'll using a different mail client than you are.
(you seem to be using Evolution 1.2.2 and I'm using Evolution 2.0.1)

Or maybe it's combined with the windows you're pasting it into.
(I pasted it into a gnome-terminal window running vi, maybe vi or
gnome-terminal strips out the unreadable characters)

In any case, I've seen things like this before.  
You need to be real careful when copying/pasting text.

Not without looking it up.  (which I have no desire to do)
Maybe some kind of tab or cursor movement code?
