Attendees: Paul Moreno, Matt Collin, Lynden Kirk, Dave Hunt, Bill Lindemann
Matt showed off his new TP-Link Portable Battery Powered 3G/4G Wireless N Router (http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-MR3040) and explained how he planned to use it to create a PirateBox (http://piratebox.cc/openwrt:diy).
You can build a PirateBox 1.0 for as little as US$35! And with the new Box Installer, you can have your PirateBox up and running in just a few minutes. UPnP Media Server for local streaming of movies and songs; Image and Message Board for 4chan-like functionality; chat room for anonymous communications; browser-based file sharing system!
We also discussed plans to establish a “Free Geek” group as a branch of our KLUG organization. This group would engage with the local community in free computer literacy classes and provide free computers to help bridge the technology divide that might exist in the community. The group would be evangelist for the “Open Source” movement and seek community and corporate support to further their goals.
